City Engineer Doubts Building Can Be Salvaged

Traffic restrictions remain in place around the intersection of 42nd and Leavenworth for public safety reasons.  City Engineer Todd Pfitzer says stuctural engineers will take a look at the building Monday afternoon, be he doesn't believe it can be saved.

The structural engineers will also determine if the buildings to the south and west of the thrift store can be salvaged.  Pfitzer says 42nd from Leavenworth to Marcy reamins closed in both directions.

He says OPPD crews will remove power lines near the building so crews can take down the large billboard that sits on top of the building.  Pfitzer says the sign is unstable and would land in the street if it falls.

Leavenworth Street is down to one lane in each direction near 42nd Street.  Omaha Police say 24 year old Dustin Hollenbeck and his 20 year old passenger Dylan Thompson were both thrown from the car and into the building after the crash.

Investigators say excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
