Police Chief Vows To Find Child Killer

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said during a Wednesday evening news conference that homicide and gang investigators will "work around the clock" to find whoever shot and killed five year old Payton Benson.

Schmaderer says Payton was eating breakfast with her mother inside their home north of 45th and Bedford around 9:45 Wednesday morning when shots were fired a block away from the house.

A stray bullet went into the house and struck Payton.  She later died at the hospital.  Schmaderer says the house and Benson's family were not the target and that there had been recent gun and gang violence in that neighborhood.

Payton's parents are identified as Tabatha Manning and Marvin Benson, who is Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray's nephew.  A $5-thousand reward is being offered through Crime Stoppers for information that leads to an arrest in the case.  The phone number is 444-STOP.

Omaha Police have released a surveillance photo of the possible suspect vehicle (below)
