State Ombudsman: Prison Patient Care Too Slow

A new report from the Nebraska State Ombudsman’s office shows that one in seven state prison inmates are on waiting lists for treatment.

Only 13-percent of prisoners are enrolled in programs including sex abuse treatment or anger management. Officials say that the lack of treatment options has come as the state prison system has seen its inmate population grow by eleven-point-five percent over the last five years while only receiving a three-point-five-percent funding increase during that same time.

The Nebraska state prison system has more than 48-hundred inmates and is about 53-percent above capacity.
