Witnesses reports say the tornado struck the southern and southeastern parts of town Friday, destroying at least four homes and the city's softball complex. The Nebraska State Patrol had closed off all roads into town as emergency responders worked on the scene.
Trees around town reportedly were stripped of their bark and trees, and power lines were down. Wayne State College's main campus was reportedly not affected.
Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Jodi Fawl says state officials were traveling to the town to help with the response effort. Phone service has been affected by the storm which is hampering communication.
Wayne County Emergency Manager Nic Kemnitz, reported damage at the Van Diest Supply Company with a possible gas line leak. A hazmat team from Norfolk is headed to Wayne.
Fawl says early reports indicate that the majority of buildings damaged in Wayne were businesses. Fawl says three farmhouses in Antelope County were also damaged, but it wasn't immediately clear whether they were hit by a tornado.
The Salvation Army disaster relief team in Norfolk is headed to Wayne to begin feeding and hydrating in the wake of a tornado.
